You are familiar with the situation: when you turn on the washing machine, all the indicators go out and the room turns off the electricity? Probably knocking traffic jams or RCDs. We will explain why the machine knocks out when the washing machine is turned on and what the cause of the malfunction is.
Malfunctions in the mains or in the washing machine?
In order for network congestion or a malfunction in the machine to not completely destroy the equipment, you need to establish why the meter knocks out and eliminate the cause of the malfunction.
When the washing machine is under warranty or if a complex electrical unit needs to be replaced, specialists should carry out diagnostics and repair work.
But maybe the problem is in the power supply or in the contacts? Before you call the master at home, you need to find out why the counter knocks out when you turn on the washing machine.
First you need to disconnect the device itself and household electrical appliances from the network and inspect the power circuits outside the washing machine.

Knocks plugs when the washing machine is turned on: we are looking for a reason in the wiring
Due to the power supply system, the RCD circuit breaker knocks out in the following cases:
- When the RCD is low quality, low capacity or improperly adjusted. This is the most common option, possible when you turn on any function of the washing machine, even when draining the water. To forget about the problem, just adjust or replace the machine itself. (See also: How to choose a machine (RCD) for a washing machine?)
- Increased load on the meter. When you turn on the machine, you must turn off other powerful electrical appliances, such as a microwave or electric stove.
- Violation of the integrity of the wiring or outlet. To check them, you need to connect an appliance of the same power. When the RCD circuit breaker flies out again, that means the reason is in the wiring.
Adjustment or replacement of RCDs should be carried out by specialists. Otherwise, unauthorized interference in the machine, meter or plugs is fraught with overheating of the mains and ignition.
What you need to consider in the wiring
The washing machine will function smoothly and reliably if the power supply of the outlet is properly configured:
- experts recommend using a 3x2.5 cable with a margin in laying the VVG power line;
- the socket must be protected from water, especially in a room with high humidity;
- if possible, it is better to connect an isolated UZO machine to the washing machine or to partition each room.
Knocks jams: the cause of malfunctions in the washing machine
So, the above options are checked and not confirmed, therefore, the reason is in the device itself.
Before diagnosis or inspection, the device must be de-energized, make sure that there is no water left in the washer. Otherwise, the probability of electrical and even mechanical injuries is high, since the washing machine has rotating units and assemblies.
There are several reasons why traffic jams, an RCD machine or a counter are knocking out:
- due to damage to the power supply plug;
- as a result of the closure of the heating heater;
- as a result of a malfunction of the line filter;
- due to a faulty engine;
- due to a faulty interference filter;
- as a result of a malfunction of the control button;
- due to damaged and frayed electrical wires.
Damage to the power cord, plug
Diagnostics always starts with a power cord and plug. During operation, the cord is subject to mechanical stress: stretched, overlapped, pinched. As a result of damage, the plug and the power outlet are not in good contact.
The wire is checked for damage with a multimeter. Replacing the power cord is as follows:
- it is necessary to disconnect the washing machine, close the inlet valve;
- use a hose to drain water (it is strictly forbidden to turn over the washer);
- unscrew the screws located around the perimeter, remove the panel;
- remove the line filter from the housing by unscrewing the screw;
- press the latches, remove the plastic stopper, squeezing it out;
- displace the electrical wire inward and sideways, thereby gaining access to the filter and de-energizing it;
- carefully pull the power cord out of the machine;
In order to install a new cord, you need to perform these steps in reverse order.
Short circuit of the heating heater
Due to low-quality water and chemicals, the heater is "eaten", various impurities and scale are layered. Heat transfer deteriorates, the heating element overheats and a short circuit occurs. As a result, knocks the counter and plugs.
To check the heater, disconnect the power cord and measure the resistance with a multimeter, setting the limit value at around 200 ohms. Normally, the resistance should vary from 20 to 50 ohms.
Sometimes the heater "closes" on the case. To eliminate this reason, the outputs and grounding bolts are alternately measured for resistance. Even a small indicator of the multimeter indicates a circuit, and this is the reason for the disconnection of the RCD.
To replace the heater you need:
- remove the back panel if the device is located at the back. If the heater is in front, the control panel is first removed, then the front cover;
- unscrew the nut of the ground bolt about 6 turns, drown the bolt inside;
- using a screwdriver, pry off the heating element and carefully remove it;
In the process of replacing the heating element, the nut must not be tightly clamped, since the heater can be squeezed out of the tank.
Line filter malfunction
The filter is necessary in order to stabilize the voltage. Network fluctuations knot out of order, when you turn on the washer, it knocks out plugs and an RCD machine. In this case, the filter needs to be replaced.
The fact that the surge protector is closed is indicated by the fusion elements on the contacts. The filter is checked by ringing the input and output wires with a multimeter.
On some models, the power cord is built into the filter, which must also be replaced.
Engine malfunction
The reason for the closure of the engine wiring occurs during prolonged use of the device or a violation of the integrity of the tank, hose. The motor contacts and the surface of the washing machine alternately ring, if a malfunction is detected, the engine is replaced, if possible, repaired. The leak must be eliminated.
In addition, plugs or an UZO machine knocks out as a result of wear on the engine brushes. In this case, they are dismantled by removing the contacts from the terminals. After installing new brushes, manually rotate the motor pulley. And if they are set correctly, the electric motor should not make a loud noise.
Interference filter malfunction
This node is located at the beginning of the circuit. Its malfunction can be established during inspection, since after the closure there will be traces of fusion of the contacts. In this case, the electrostatic precipitator of the washing machine must be replaced.
Faulty contacts and control buttons
The power button is used often, so the check must begin with its diagnosis. If the washing machine is new, worn and oxidized contacts are visible during inspection. Using a multimeter, check the wires and contacts leading to the control panel, engine, heater, pump and other units.
To replace a damaged button, disconnect the panel and electrical wires. Then carefully remove the faulty button and set another.
Broken and frayed wires
Scuffing of wires, as a rule, occurs in an inaccessible place of the washing machine. When the device vibrates when draining water or drying, the electric wires rub against the panel and after some time the insulation will fray. The electrical closure on the case is the result of the machine tripping. Places of damage to the wire are determined visually: carbon deposits appear on the insulating layer, darkened areas of reflow. These locations require soldering and re-insulation.
In conclusion, I want to caution: if an automatic machine is knocked out when the washing machine is turned on, there is a high probability of electric shock. It is very dangerous! In addition, even minor irregularities in the wiring of the apparatus or in the mains lead to ignition.
Therefore, it is not recommended to turn on the RCD machine and continue washing, but it is necessary to identify and eliminate the cause of the malfunction.
